One common sign of a problematic starter is the car doesn't start when the key is turned or when the ignition button is pressed. Unless the lights have been left on and the battery is totally dead, it's most likely because there is a failed circuit in the starter relay. If the circuit hasn't failed completely, there will be a clicking noise when the ignition key is turned.
Another clue for a problematic starter is that it stays on after ignition. The starter circuit is meant to close after ignition, so power to the starter motor is cut off once the vehicle starts. If the main contacts in the starter relay are stuck in closed position, this occurs.
